Quick answers

Do these apps work in English?
Yes. All six offer English interfaces. Naver Map, KakaoMap, Papago, and Subway Korea are built with travellers in mind, and Kakao T and KakaoTalk support English menus.
Are they free?
Yes, all six are free to download and use. Taxi fares or optional in-app purchases are separate, but the apps themselves cost nothing.
Why not just use Google Maps?
Korea restricts detailed map-data export, so Google Maps has limited walking and transit directions here. Naver Map and KakaoMap are what locals actually rely on.
