Spring (late March to May) is mild and full of cherry blossoms, which is exactly why it's one of the busiest times to come. Summer (June to August) turns hot and sticky, with a rainy monsoon stretch in July and the odd typhoon. Autumn (late September to November) is the one a lot of travellers rave about - clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and foliage that's genuinely worth the trip. Winter (December to February) is cold, dry, and quiet, and also the cheapest, with snow and ski resorts to show for it.

Cherry blossoms and autumn foliage

Cherry blossoms tend to peak from late March in the warmer south (Busan, Jeju) up to early April in Seoul, and the show only lasts about a week, so timing is everything. Autumn foliage follows a similar rolling pattern, peaking from mid-October in the mountains to early November in Seoul.

The cheapest time to visit

Winter (December to February), once you steer clear of the New Year and Lunar New Year holidays, is the quietest and cheapest stretch of all - flights and hotels drop noticeably. Late June into early July, right before summer peaks, can also come cheap if a bit of rain doesn't put you off.

What to pack

For spring and autumn, think light layers, a jacket for the cool evenings, and comfortable walking shoes. Summer calls for breathable clothes, sunscreen, and an umbrella for the monsoon. Winter is another matter entirely: bring a proper warm coat, gloves, and a hat, because it gets genuinely cold outside, even though indoors is toasty.

Season aside, comfortable shoes matter most of all. Korea rewards walking, and you'll be on the subway and buses constantly.
